House With Carving

This house is on Queen's Park and was originally a private home when built but is now part of St Michael's College at U of Toronto and is used for offices. You can see yesterday's carving to the right of that fabulous turret. I love the little balcony above the corner turret. And that very old little fence.

Spire

This lovely spire belongs to St Basil's Church at St Michael's College at U of Toronto. You can see again how there are condo towers springing up everywhere in our city!

Surrounded

This very old coach house is located behind the library at St Michael's College at U of Toronto but from this direction it looks to be surrounded by condo towers which are going up all over the downtown area of the city. It is being used for something but I couldn't tell what and most of the windows have been closed in.

St Basil's

This lovely Gothic Revival church is St Basil's, found at St Michael's College at U of Toronto, and it functions as a parish church as well as a collegiate church. Established in 1856 in a countryside location, it remains the 3rd oldest Roman Catholic church in the city and now finds itself in the middle of downtown as the city spread out around it. I must go by for some interior pics one day.

Elmsley Hall

I've gone into my archives for a sunny fall pic since it has been so dull and grey here lately. Elmsley Hall was designed by architects Brennan & Whale and built at St Michael's College at U of Toronto in 1955. The hall serves as a men's residence and this pic shows the attached power plant and 75' tall chimney which didn't have the clock (designed by Steven Fong) installed until 2005. I can't imagine it without the clock today!

Anticipation

Just a bit up Bay St from yesterday's post is this sculpture by artist Kosso Eloul who was born in Russia but lived in Toronto for many years. Titled "Zen West", the 3 stainless steel boxes leave the viewer in a state of suspense waiting for their collapse to the ground. It is part of the wonderful sculpture collection at St Michael's College and is one of over 40 of Eloul's sculptures on public display in Toronto.

"Consolation"

This is another sculpture from a courtyard on the grounds of St Mike's College at U of Toronto. This bronze by Canadian artist Joe Rosenthal was installed in 1996 and represents one friend consoling the other - it's quite touching. It is the 2nd of 2 pieces by Rosenthal at St Mike's.

"Businessman On A Horse"

Another one of William McElcheran's befuddled businessmen, this bronze sculpture was hard to find as it is tucked away in a lovely courtyard at St Mike's College, part of U of Toronto. McElcheran claimed that this sculpture represented the "non-hero" on his trusty steed. Love it!

Michael

This sculpture titled "Michael" is found in the quadrangle at St Michael's College at U of Toronto. By Canadian artist Anne Allardyce, it was commissioned by St Mike's to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the college in 1978. The stainless steel is welded in a way that makes it look like it was folded into shape - it works quite well.

Neighbours

This sculpture titled "Neighbours" by Canadian artist Joe Rosenthal was installed in 2001. Installed near the walkway into St Michael's College at U of Toronto, it has a really friendly, welcoming feeling to it. He has another sculpture in the same area which I will try to get a shot of before winter hits us.

Old & New

This church is St Basil's which is a parish church and the collegiate church for St Michael's College at U of Toronto. Designed by architect William Hay, it was founded in 1856 and is the 3rd oldest Catholic church in Toronto. The U is part of the advertising campaign for a new condominium complex to be constructed adjacent to the church. Makes a good frame.
