Keep Out

This spider would definitely keep me out if it was real. There are so many spooky scenes around in front gardens this year. Enjoy Halloween!

A Park Encounter

These are the same Yorkies that I showed last Saturday but a different encounter. This young woman actually had a dog treat in her pocket which was a hit with this old dog. He then posed for her to take a pic.

Walkies

I have spoken to this woman a couple of times while she walks her Yorkies and have watched  as she bribes the one on the right to keep walking. That one is 16 years old and would rather take it easy so it follows along behind her while the other dog is young and on a leash to keep her under control. It is fun to watch their strolls through the park.

Fishy

I spotted this mailbox the other day and was certainly surprised to see it. It was out front of a modern infill house in a neighbourhood of older traditional homes. I loved see it.

Bath Time

I have this small shallow metal bird bath on the roof deck that the honey bees like to use to get good drinks of water as they sit along the edges. For the last few weeks the house sparrows have been going wild taking baths and totally emptying it even though I fill it up several times a day. Sometimes there can be as many as 4 birds sitting along the edges waiting for a turn.

Got Any Treats?

This cheeky squirrel was just a few feet away fro me as I walked along a path and he was quite determined to get some type of food from me. I had lots of time to pull out my camera and take a few shots while he stared me down.

Keeping Warm

We had a cool morning a couple of weeks ago and I happened to be at the grocery store where there is a flock of about 20 pigeons who live around the parking lot. It was the first time I have ever seen them all down onto the asphalt trying to keep warm as it had been sunny earlier. There were pigeons hunkered down everywhere.

Slow Walk

I think this is a cicada which I spotted walking very slowly across the pavement in a laneway. At first I thought that it was dead but when I got closer to it the poor thing started to walk faster. It has the look of an ancient fossil about it.

Foraging

These little devils are very busy at this time of year as they forage for food to store away and also look for places they can get into for shelter in the winter. It seems to be a constant battle to keep my tomatoes from them!

Porch Creature

Earlier in the summer I showed you cutouts of animals found on steel panels around a front porch. At the time I didn't show this wonderful elephant that is also on the porch. He made a fine addition to the others.

Resting Up

Sometimes on a warm afternoon you just have to take a break and this squirrel was resting up before it could start foraging for treats again. It is a busy time of year for them with everyone's veggie gardens full of nice ripe produce.

UFO

I have been seeing this insect on various plants and surfaces for the last week but haven't figured out what it is. It looks a bit like a fly and a bit like some type of bee. Any ideas?

Snack Time

I just managed to catch this shot of the female Cardinal just be fore she flew off so she is a bit out of focus. I think she was being protective of her snack since there were a bunch of sparrows foraging around her. Not as bright as the males they are still pretty birds.

Theme Day: Purple

The August theme for the City Daily Photo Blog community is purple and for this theme I offer this rare purple speckled fish which I made in earthenware about 20 years ago. There aren't very many of them around. This is also my entry for the Saturday's Critters meme.

First Caterpillar Stage

This is the first little caterpillar that emerges from the egg of a Black Swallowtail Butterfly. It is only about 1 inch long and will go through a few more stages until it reaches its final size and appearance. I had no idea what these were when I first saw them on my dill plants.

Siblings

I have been having lots of Black Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars on my dill plants but then they seem to disappear and I have seen no butterflies yet. Sometimes they can be there and an hour later they are gone. A mystery.

A Cutie

This is a 4 month old standard Poodle who has yet to have her first haircut. She had just had a bath and blow dry so was really soft and full of cuddles.

Frog

I am back to the front porch that I showed you a few weeks ago with the great stork cut-out of steel. There were a few more creatures featured in the cut-outs and this is one of them, a tree frog. The dark areas are where there is a shaded background giving a nice effect.

Hungry

I spotted this caterpillar chewing away on some of my dill plants. I don't know what kind he is - maybe a Swallowtail? A few hours later he was gone which was a surprise.

The Guardian

I often walk by a construction supply yard when they are closed and this fine guy is their guardian. This pic was taken through the fence. He had been curled up having a rest but as soon as I stopped he had to get up to come and say hello. He seems quite friendly but I wouldn't put my hand through the fence.
