More Fog

 I couldn't resist another shot of the fog we had for a couple of days. It usually doesn't hang around too long but this time it did.

Foggy Days

Last weeks we had a few days with heavy fog in areas. When I was passing by this cemetery the trees were all softened by the mist and I couldn't resist heading in for some shots.

Trees

One of the best places to see grand tree specimens is in cemeteries as these trees found at Prospect cemetery show. This wide open space is part of the veterans section where a large number of the older graves are marked by tablets in the ground. Most of these are from the 1920s and 30s.

Snowy Morning

We haven't had much snow this winter until March came and since then we have had days of snow followed by days of melting. It doesn't feel like spring. This shot was taken last week at Prospect Cemetery.

Dreaming of Green Trees

 This is a shot from last autumn when I spotted this large elegant willow tree in Prospect Cemetery. I am dreaming of sitting out in the warm sunshine this spring and getting rid of winter coats & boots.

In Memory

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada when we pay tribute to all those who have given up their lives for us all. This wonderful cross memorial is found in the veterans area of Prospect Cemetery. The inscription is quite worn but it reads " To the Memory of those who in the Great War Died for King & Country 1914-1919". The surrounding area has hundreds of graves of men who died too young in battle. Lest we forget.

More Red

 I was driving past Prospect Cemetery and saw these Maple trees looking so glorious that I turned around and went into the cemetery to admire them. It is a huge cemetery first opened in 1890 in a location outside of the city but it is now right in the middle of the city running from St Clair Ave all the way up to Eglinton Ave.

An Urban Graveyard

This is St Michael's Cemetery which is the oldest Catholic cemetery in the city. What is unusual about it is that it is 10 acres right in the middle of a city block surrounded completely by houses and stores except for one narrow driveway. You have to know that is there to find it. This was a pic from February when the snow was still with us.

St Philip's Anglican Church

This lovely church is located in the Weston neighbourhood of the city and was built in 1894 when Weston was a small farming village outside of the city but it is now right in the city. The parish was established in 1828 and a wooden church was built which burned in 1888 and resulted in the new brick church being constructed. That building originally consisted of the left half in this pic, basically from the front of the bell tower back to the left. the front half on the right was added in 1955. You can see the difference in the style of windows and a slight change in the roof. The cemetery has some very old graves - a few I saw were from the 1840s. Once more the doors were locked!

The Beltline

The Kay Gardiner Beltline Park is a 4.5 km long linear park that runs through the middle of the city following the route of a railway line that ran there from the 1890s until the 1960s. It is a really popular hiking, biking and running trail especially in the summer since it is well-shaded and so treed that in parts of it you can forget that you are in the city. This pic was taken along the part of the trail which runs along the  northern edge of the Mount Pleasant Cemetery and as you can see, it is not cleared of snow or ice at all so it can be a challenging route in winter!

Chalmers Headstone

Wallace Chalmers was involved in perfecting and patenting a rubber suspension system for vehicles and his family chose to have a very unique headstone made for him. This granite tire is 36" wide and 6"  deep and has to be one of the most unique I have ever seen! The reflection in the middle is a little added feature.

Mt Pleasant Cemetery Gates

This is the Yonge St entrance to Mt Pleasant Cemetery which opened in 1876 on the outskirts of Toronto but is now is located in the centre of the city as the city grew around it. It is the largest (over 200 acres) and most beautiful cemetery in the city with its wandering paths and trails which lead you through the park-like arboretum that is one of the finest in N America. The cemetery was named a "National Historic Site of Canada" in 2000 based on its beauty, its variety of wonderful sculptures, and the many important people who have their final resting places there. It's a great place to wander on a sunny cold winter day as it offers a bit of protection from the wind. Tomorrow I will show you probably the most unusual headstone to be found there.
