Little Italy

Unfortunately there are always vehicles parked in front of this mural in Little Italy but you still get a good view of it. The Pylon was one of the previous names of the Royal theatre which I showed you last Wednesday. The artist for this one is SumArtist.

August Theme: Fruit

The August Theme for the City Daily Photo Blog community is Fruit and for this one I chose a shot from one of the corner stores in Little Italy.  They are great places to pick up fresh fruit and veggies and the prices are always good. This is a different store than the one I showed a couple of weeks ago.

The Royal

The Royal is found on College St in Little Italy. The building was finished in 1939 and has had several names through the years as it functioned as a cinema. It is now an event space but also shows second run films and also takes part in film festivals.

Tasty Treats

This is another shot from the Little Italy neighbourhood. There are lots of places to get tasty food along College St and this mural makes sure that you know it. The artist for this one is Julia Paliy.

Garden Decor

This sculpture was spotted in the front garden of a house in the Little Italy neighbourhood. The white stone section really looks as if it had a previous use but I have no idea what that could be. The metal insert hanging in the middle was quite reflective when it turned but for some reason it didn't show in the camera. Lots of questions with this one.

Little Italy Streetscape

These are typical of the buildings found along College St in the Little Italy neighbourhood with commercial usage on the ground floor and residential above. It is such a nice scale.

A Sunday Morning

This is a typical street in the Little Italy neighbourhood on a Sunday morning when not many people are out and about yet. Even on a hot day those trees make the area feel cooler.

Dancing With A Flag

This lovely lady dancing with a large Italian flag was spotted, suitably, on a wall in Little Italy. The artist for this one is SumArtist.

Greenery

Another utility box, this one found on College St in Little Italy beside a restaurant patio. It blends in quite well with the plants around it. The artist for this one is Hot Snackz.

Houses In Little Italy

These are typical of the houses found in Little Italy. They were originally built to be two stories high but most of them have now had the attics opened up and used as living space, usually a bedroom. The one on the left has a coach house in the back yard that is used as an apartment now. I love all of those large porches.

Heart

This wonderful sign is found along College St in the middle of Little Italy. I like all of the multi language words that are all so positive.

An Unusual Addition

Very near the attractive brick building that I showed you on Tuesday I spotted this very unusual addition atop a typical Little Italy home. It probably makes for a nice space inside but it is certainly out of the norm.

Contrast in Style

I had spotted this building on Google maps when I was looking for something else and then a few days later headed down to see it. What had been a small commercial building in the middle of a residential area in Little Italy was added to and converted into this striking home. I really like the style and all of the nice brickwork that was used. You can see a bit of the house to its right which is the typical Victorian seen in this neighbourhood.

Cute House

This bungalow is a bit of a rarity in the Little Italy district where most of the homes are tall Victorians. There is something cute about it and the little girl riding into the shot on her yellow scooter is a bonus.

Monarch Tavern

The Monarch Tavern has been open on the corner of Clinton and Henderson in Little Italy since 1927.  It is one of the oldest licensed places in the city with a friendly pub on the upper floor and a cocktail lounge on the main floor. Hopefully it will be open for business again soon!

Clouds

I love that someone painted this wall blue with wonderful clouds. This is the service and garbage area behind some restaurants on College St in Little Italy, an area that would normally look rather dismal. Now it looks a bit special.

Hello

I spotted this woman with the nice greeting on a corner in Little Italy. We all can use a bit of pleasant welcoming these days. The artist for this one is Vivian Rosas and it was done in 2019.

Pens

While out wandering around a couple of weeks ago I happened upon this stationery store. I had no idea it even existed and looking through the window you could see lovely displays of paper etc. Of course like all the rest of our stores it is closed now during our lockdown. It is a place to visit when normal comes back.

Still In Lockdown

This is the Cafe Diplomatico, one of Toronto's most loved restaurants and patios. It has been a mainstay on College St since 1968 and in nice weather it is hard to get a seat out on that patio. We are in lockdown until June 2 and so this view on a recent Sunday is not about to change until at least then. So many places are closing for good.

Ice Cream

While out for a wander I spotted this mural and great sign along the side of a building on College St in Little Italy. I love the name "The Big Chill" for an ice cream parlour. The sign must be super when lit up at night!
