Trinity Doors

 

This is the main doorway into Trinity College which I showed yesterday. The hinges on old doors like this are always so impressive. I like the little carved details too.

Outside of Cloister

I thought that I would show you the outside of the cloister that I showed you on Sunday. I love all the detail work and carvings on the wooden supports. There are so many lovely wood carvings at University College.

 

A Dragon

 

This wonderfully carved dragon was spotted in the University College building which I showed you yesterday. It is probably the best of all the beautiful carvings found throughout the building. Once again I have no live creature for Saturday's Critters.

More Details

I couldn't resist posting another shot of the details in the ceiling of the WWII memorial at U of Toronto so here it is.

Old Carving

This wonderful carving is found on our old city hall which is right beside our new city hall. The old city hall was used by the city council from 1899 to 1966 and is now used for various government things such as some courtrooms. I love the details in this carving.

Carvings At School

These carvings are found over the main door of Central Technical School. The top crest is that of the city of Toronto and the two smaller carvings were done by the stonemasons working on the school to represent both the academic side & the technical side of the school. Considering that the school was built in the early 1900s the carvings are in great shape.

The Scholar

This is one of the gargoyles found over the entrance in yesterday's pic of Central Technical school. The stonemasons were given free reign to design the gargoyles and this one they chose to do as a scholar. Suitable for the school.

Contrast

When wandering through the Yorkville neighbourhood I spotted this scene in the front garden of an old Victorian house. I love the contrast between the carved terra cotta head on the wall and the angular bronze sculpture out front!

Elegant Entrance

This is the entrance to the York Club which is a private social club that has been in this location at Bloor St and St George St in the Annex neighbourhood since 1910. The building was built in 1899 as a private residence and remained so until the owner died and it was sold to the club. I love all of the fine carving you can see.

Entrance Detail

This is a closeup of the carvings found on the columns in yesterdays pic of the entrance to the Royal Conservatory of Music. I love the craftsmanship that you find on older buildings, something that is rare today.

September Theme Day: "Teach"

The September theme for the City Daily Photo Blog community is "Teach" and I chose this carving of a book which is found on the old Ontario Government Building on the Exhibition Grounds downtown. The building was finished in 1926 to be used for displays during the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) but is now an event space known as the Liberty Grand. The wonderful carvings on the building have been wonderfully maintained and I thought this was a good one for teach.

Classy Facade

I love the carvings on the Graphic Arts Building on Richmond St. The building was finished in 1913 and was the home to Saturday Night magazine until the early 2000s when it was converted into 65 condo units. I've seen pics of the interior and it is just as classy as the outside. It is good that it wasn't torn down to construct a modern building!

Column Carving

This is a pic of the carving found at the top of the columns of the porch in yesterday's pic. It is good to see that the details have survived the years so well and are now visible after a growth of vines has been removed.

Deco Details

The Horse Palace which I showed you yesterday has many wonderful Art Deco details on its walls. I particularly like these low relief horse heads that are carved into the limestone!

Details

This shot shows some of the details found above the door in yesterday's post. Since the building was originally built to showcase Ontario provincial exhibits it looks as if these panels are depicting types of industry found in the province. The one on the left looks like the lumber industry, the middle one is mining while the one on the right is a mystery to me. I couldn't figure it out at all. I do like this type of carving though.

Second Floor Detail

I've always been intrigued by this beautiful detail work that is found surrounding just one of the second floor windows on a nondescript building across from Casa Loma on Davenport Rd. All of the other windows are plain and it makes me think that some sort of modification has been done and that perhaps this had been above what had been an entrance into the building and which is now bricked up. Whatever the reason I love the Deco feel and the lovely carvings.

Flower Carving

This has to be some of the most beautiful carving I have seen on a house. And it has been beautifully maintained and possibly restored. Tomorrow I will show you where it can be found.

The Owl and The Hawk

A tree by one of the homes in Wychwood Park had to be taken down but the homeowners saved the trunk and had someone do a bit of carving for them. I particularly like the owl peeking out from its hollow!

Knox Details

These wonderful carvings and details are found over the entrance to Knox College from the front campus at U of Toronto. Considering the age of the building they are still in great shape!

A Stable Fence

This is part of the fence by the Casa Loma stables with one of the turrets from the stables and part of the potting shed visible in the background. I'm always partial to carvings so I find this section of the fence wonderful.
