More Celebrations

This window was across the road from the one I showed you yesterday. It has a very sporty theme and I quite like the retro feel of all of the posters. Tomorrow is the big party day for Canada 150!

Nice

More advertising for our Canada 150 celebrations that take place on July 1 and mark 150 years since Confederation. This is one of the windows at a Roots store, a company that always celebrates Canada.

Comfort

This house found in the Lawrence Park neighbourhood says comfort to me. I think it is full of big couches for lounging and has a great back garden for summertime relaxing. I wonder if I'm right?

Baldwin Steps

This is a pic of the public walkway that leads up the steep hill to Casa Loma at the top. The hill itself was part of the shoreline of an ancient lake and the name Baldwin refers to the family who owned this property before it became public. The big steps on the left are for sitting while the 110 steps to the right lead you to the top. In the 1960s this area was to be taken over by a 6 lane highway which would have run through the centre of the Annex neighbourhood but was cancelled in 1971 after probably the largest resistance our city has ever seen with protests everywhere!

Night Prowler

I'm back to the same laneway as the last few weeks to show another of the decorated garage doors. This one features one of our raccoons which are famous for wandering the streets at night invading garbage containers and causing chaos as they prowl our neighbourhoods. There are huge numbers of them all over the city.

Infill In The Annex

I have shown you many pics of the wonderful large Victorian homes found in the Annex neighbourhood over the years and today I present one in a totally different style. This is an infill house built on a small lot that had previously held a garage and had a few parking spaces. The house occupies almost the whole lot - that garage peeking in on the left is a different lot as are the trees on the right. I think there is a lovely airy deck out back and lots of skylights so it is probably quite bright inside despite this imposing facade.

Camouflaged

This cute little Song Sparrow was hard to spot in the seed husks below a bird feeder. They have to have one of the most beautiful bird songs!

Great Porches

A recent walk through the Annex neighbourhood had me admiring the wonderful porches found on so many of these large older homes. This one in particular has porches so large that there is space for a hammock on that 2nd floor porch. These houses were all built as single family homes in the late 1800s but most are now divided into flats although the trend is to buy and reconvert to single family dwellings.

Side Entrance

This is the side entrance to one of the large homes in the Annex neighbourhood, not the main entrance! It is quite wonderful isn't it?

Celebration

On Canada Day which is July 1, we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada which the government has been promoting as Canada 150. Everyone seems to be getting in on the celebration - even the cat on this package of toilet tissue!

Iris Season

It is too bad that the Iris season is so short since they are so beautiful to see in all of their different colours. This purple one is a traditional favourite.

Squirrely Garage

This is yet another garage door from the same laneway I have been showing for the last few weeks - there are a lot of murals along this laneway. Our squirrels are all grey or black so there has been a bit of artistic license used here but I quite like this one. The dandelion not so much but the pansies are cute.

Music In The Neighbourhood

Last weekend on Saturday, the Seaton Village neighbourhood had a wonderful free musical event going on for the whole day. There were live performances by over 130 acts at just over 30 locations which included front porches such as this one, garages, laneways and a stage in the local park. Hundreds of people were out to enjoy the beautiful day and the great sounds and many brought their own chairs which they set up right on the street!

A Hunter

I took this pic earlier in the year on a cold day before we had any leaves out so this Peregrine Falcon has all of its feathers puffed out. The lack of leaves also made hunting a bit easier for it too as it seemed to be very successful at catching its prey.

Pink Door

With a door this colour there is no way that you will head to the wrong house when heading home. I quite like this vibrant pink!

Green House Revisited

I showed you this house a few weeks ago before we had leaves and green grass (HERE) so I went back for an update. It looks so different now with all the greenery around reflecting off the house. Pretty don't you think?

Weston

This is one side of the pedestrian bridge that crosses the train tracks in the Weston neighbourhood. As you can see from the crane another condo tower is going up in town this one on the site of what had been the Weston Farmers Market. The market is supposed to relocate to the ground floor of the new building.

Parking For Bikes

This pic was taken early on a Sunday morning by an office building so no bikes were around but there sure are a lot of spaces. I'm not sure how secure these posts would be since it seems that just the front tire slips into the space but I suppose you could put the bike beside the post and lock your frame to it.

Blue Jay

This is another mural from the same laneway where I found the tulips on the garage last week. It is always nice to catch the flash of blue of a Blue Jay in the trees so I imagine it must be the same to pull up to your garage and see this mural. No artist name on this one.

Bigger But Better?

This is yet another of the large homes built after a nice Ranch style home has been torn down. The location is wonderful looking down into the ravines along the Humber River but I can't help but miss the sleekness of the old Ranch style.

Take Out Diner

If you look carefully on the right side of this bird feeder you will see a wee chipmunk who I watched for a long time one day. He would climb up onto the feeder fill up his cheeks and then take off to return about 5 minutes later and fill up again. Somewhere there must be at least a month's supply of food stashed away!

Fountain

This pretty fountain is found in St James Park which is a park right downtown beside St James Cathedral and the park is actually co-owned by the church and the city and maintained by the Garden Club of Toronto. This pic is from my archives taken in summer past and shows part of the gardens which are Victorian inspired. Look carefully to see who is getting a drink at the top of the fountain.

Tracks To Somewhere

There is something about train tracks that makes me wish I was on a train going somewhere. Heading for an adventure!

Benches?

I've driven by this installation many times and could never figure it out. I actually thought that it must be a fountain of some sort but that it wasn't working. So I finally stopped to check it out and it definitely isn't a fountain and I'm thinking that these are three identical benches since there is a flat area perfect for sitting on one side of each one. Strange! I could find no info about this at all.

Ringed

More bike rings and since the shot was taken on an early Sunday morning none are being used. I like how they line up.

Springtime In The Laneway

I thought the mural on this garage was quite nice in its simplicity and it is perfect for this time of year!

Turrets

So many of the homes in the Annex neighbourhood have these wonderful turrets. Can you imagine how magical it must be in those rooms with the little round corner?

Table for Three!

The Cardinal had joined the House Finch couple for a meal when I spotted them on this feeder a while ago. Good looking group!

Room With A View

This pic was taken from the 12th floor of a building in the northern part of the city probably about 10 miles from the CN Tower which you can see in the distance where it sits by Lake Ontario. It was a clear day so you can actually see a bit of the lake peeking out.

Theme Day: "Nature"

The June theme for the City Daily Photo Blog community is Nature. This view taken in James Gardens is manipulated by humans but it is nature that makes it so beautiful to see. Such a scene really lifts the spirits!
