Starry Head

I was asked about the structure that could be seen towards the top of the gallery conversion pic from Tuesday's post so here is a close-up. There are actually 2 of these heads suspended in the complex and they were installed soon after the gallery opened here in '89. The artist is John McEwen and I just discovered that he is also the artist who did the steel teddy bear laying on the grass in Wychwood - click here. Apparently Teddy is called "Pilgrim" and was done in 2011. McEwen is known for his star cut-outs as you see on the head.

Okay, now I see it's a head. Thanks! Though I must say I like "Pilgrim" better.

Hmmmm made me think of Ronald Regan for some reason, and he isn't even Canadian, sorry!

This is some good art. For a second I also thought about Reagan.

I dunno. From your point of view, do these heads do anything for the building? The stars must have some significance for Mr. McEwen but I don't get 'em. I'm not complaining, just saying they don't seem to have much pizzaz. Maybe you gotta see them in person. :-)

That is ingenious and really cool!

This is pretty unusual. Though I don't think I will be commissioning one for my house.

Yup I prefer Pilgrim Teddy also, but I can certainly appreciate the head with the star cut outs, especially as you've shown it here Pat with the blue of the sky showing through. You've definitely shown his best 'angle'!!

How curious that he does star cut outs. Was he once an American, I wonder?
