Tollkeeper's Cottage

I showed you this cottage in the background of a pic of the blue canoe which is part of the Butterfly Way project. It is located at the corner of Bathurst St & Davenport Rd and served as the home for the tollkeeper who collected fees here from travelers along Davenport in the 1800s. During the 1800s private companies were allowed to collect tolls in return for building and maintaining roads and there were several of these along Davenport Rd. This cottage was built around 1835 and has quite a history if you click HERE. It was discovered a block away after a move years and years ago until finally being returned to its rightful location.

...I'm surprised that they haven't built a high rise on the site.

Stay away from Hwy 407. Their rates are ridiculously high. ٩(̾●̮̮̃̾•̃̾)۶

Interesting history of both the road and the house. I see the gate is not in good condition, and the house itself could use some maintenance. I'm sure the pandemic has not helped.

That history is interesting. It's great that it has been preserved and according to your link, used often for public events.

What a wonderful story this old house has and it's still around. It's nice when people appreciate a historical buidling.

It looks wonderful and I do hope they decide to keep it! Also great for school children's history field trips!
