Totem Pole on Spadina

This wonderful red cedar totem pole carved by Canadian artist Don McLeay was installed in 1980 in front of the 'Native Canadian Centre' on Spadina Rd. The centre is an urban Aboriginal community centre offering many services to the Aboriginal community (seminars, counseling, gift shop, etc) and to the community at large. I took a snow shot of the pole last week but I think this shot from last fall shows it in a truer light!

I don't know much about totems. I thought the tribe who carved totems were out west. So, I learn more today.

I know there is quite a lot of lore attached to them. Pretty cool.

Jack - I am no expert on totems either, but Don McLeay is a Plains Cree born in Saskatchewan (a prairie province) who moved out to the west coast as a child and is quite well known as a west coast artist.

Lovely carving. I haven't seen that one in person but I have seen a few in Muskoka.
